LEARN PORTUGUESE IN FARO

Faro is a city located in the southern side of Portugal, and is the administrative centre for the whole of the Algarve region; the city is an excellent gateway to Portugal’s south coast and Spain’s Costa de la Luz. Faro dates back to Roman times and the city has Arab and Roman ruins. The city is particularly attractive because it is surrounded still by the Roman walls, inside a spacious open square that once was the site of the Roman Forum that includes a beautiful Cathedral, Episcopal Palace, churches, museums and other monuments.

About the city

The city has many influences since Paleolithic age, during Roman occupation the city was an important town, before the city was occupied by the Visigoth, and by the Moors who called to the city as Ossonoba, later the name of Santa Maria began to be used instead of Ossonoba, later the local people known to the town as Harun, whence its current name come. The forces of the King Dom Afonso III defeated to the moors and the town declined its importance. In the Medieval age, the town was plundered by the Earl of Essex with his fellow crusaders on their journey to the Holy Land, who took the books of Bishop to the Bodleian Library in Oxford; another interesting thing about the history of Faro was that some Jewish inhabitants kept busy printing copies of the Old Testament.
